Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, yesterday called on the Guyana Police Force to conduct a national inventory of all vehicles in the Force to determine its needs.
Yesterday, Rohee handed over three Canter trucks, six sports utility vehicles and a car to the Guyana Police Force.
Commissioner Henry Greene said the 4X4 vehicles will be ideal for use in the backdams and places where there are bad roads. He said the vehicles would also assist the Force in maintaining “public order” operations.
Rohee called on the Police Commissioner to ensure the inventory is done “as speedily as possible.”
He said that the government has always insisted on “preventative maintenance” in which the vehicles are serviced based on a roster system.
However, he said there is a need for the administration to know if it needs to provide more new vehicles and what types of vehicles are needed.
The Commissioner noted that while the Force has many vehicles, many are “aged” and break down easily.
Rohee said that the inventory will be conducted of all vehicles in each Police division and sub-division.
Meanwhile, Rohee said the Force is constantly upgrading the competence of drivers.
“Police drivers have to be much better than an ordinary driver on the street, because people expect them to always set an example to be professional and avoid getting involved in frivolous accidents,” he stated.
