Fitness Express contributes to Belgrave’s participation at Hampton Games in T&T

Leading boys Under-15 200 and 400m athlete Calvin Belgrave’s participation at the 2010 Hampton Games set for the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago from June 28 is closer to reality, thanks to Jamie Mc Donald, Manager of Fitness Express, located at 47, Sheriff Street, Campbellville.
Belgrave, who will be part of an 8-man team from the Enmore Athletics Club who will be making the trip on Thursday afternoon, received a financial boost towards his airfare from Mc Donald who said he was very pleased to be supporting the young and budding athlete.
“I am very happy to be able to make this contribution to young Belgrave in his endeavors to bring glory to his country and himself by excelling at the upcoming Games which I understand he has performed well at before. We at Fitness Express have always relished the opportunity of encouraging our youth to excel and we will continue to empower them in whatever way we can.”
Belgrave, who won gold in the 400m at the said meet in 2007 as an Under-13 runner will be competing again in the 200m and 400m. He has had the privilege of meeting World Sprint Record holder Usain Bolt who is his idol and is aiming to be as successful as Bolt in the future.
Belgrave has been competing at the National Schools Championships ever since 2005 and has been recording encouraging results.
He has also been a consistent high performer in many Athletics Association of Guyana run Meets so far this year; recording 57.25s in the boys Under-17 400m at the first Developmental Meet last March at the Eve Leary Ground, placing 3rd.
Mc Donald said he believes that with the right exposure and management, Belgrave like many other talented Guyanese athletes will do his county proud.
The other athletes from the Enmore Athletics Club who have been named to compete at the Hampton Games are Under-15 Ornesto Thomas (800m & 1500m), Under-17 Malcolm Walcott (800m & 1500m), Under-17 Kade Pearce (100m, 200m, 400m), Under-20 Keith Gordon (800m & 1500m) and Kenneth Semple who is already in the twin Island Republic compliments of Toolsie Persaud Ltd.
Semple, who will be competing in the 110m and 200m events, will use the Hampton Games as warm up for the CAC Championships in Puerto Rico next month as well as the Commonwealth Games in India in October of this year.
Club Coach John Martins will travel with the team and has expressed confidence that his charges will do well at the games again this year.
