Local officials are warning that heavy rains are likely this weekend as a weather condition which saw downpours in neighbouring Trinidad & Tobago head to this country.
Today, cloudy skies with showers are expected along the coast and over Regions 7, 9 and 10. The situation is expected to continue tomorrow and Sunday with cloudy conditions and heavy showers.
According to figures from the Ministry of Agriculture yesterday, the El Nino conditions which caused damage from dry conditions last year and for the first quarter of 2010, has significantly weakened.
“Currently we are transitioning from the prolonged dry period into our primary rainfall season (mid-April to mid-August). As the ENSO (El Nino) neutral phase establishes, there are reasonably high probabilities of normal rainfall during this season. There may be periods of heavy high intensity rains over Guyana during May-June and July 2010.”
At least twenty (20) rain days are expected in June 2010, the Ministry said. A rain day is when the rainfall records around 1 mm.
The long-term daily average rainfall for Georgetown, for the next 10 days, including today, until to June 19 is 11.8mm per day.
