Young Warriors dominate Leguan zone in Essequibo Islands 10/10 softball cricket

Cricket fans in region two turned out in large numbers to be a part of the action when the Guyana Softball League in collaboration with Banks DIH Ltd, the Guyana National Shipping Corporation (GNSC) and Western Union and Bill Express launched a 10/10 softball cricket tournament on the Essequibo Islands over the past weekend.
The participating teams have been divided into four zones and while action in the Leguan zone has commenced those in the Wakenaam zone will get underway on the June 13. Teams in the Bartica zone get into action from June 20.
The semi-finalists and finalists will be determined at the completion of the preliminary rounds.
Further, the Trophy Stall Angels and the Leguan Female team will go head to head in a female exhibition match slated for the final day of the competition.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Managing Director of RMG Business Enterprises, Mr. Ronald Griffith reminded the players that the aim of the tournament is to integrate the communities while imparting valuable life skills to the participants of the region. Mr. Griffith commended Banks DIH, GNSC and Western Union for their corporate chivalry while intimating that the tournament would be a yearly feature on the Essequibo Islands sports calendar.
Representative of the Guyana Softball League, Mr. Harvey Gobin implored the participants and fans to utilize the opportunity to build bridges of friendship in the various communities. He urged them to support each other in their sporting endeavors in keeping with the motto of the Guyana Softball League, ‘Unity and Harmony through Sports.’ “This motto is manifested by all stakeholders and should be enforced at all times, exhorted Mr. Gobin.
Meanwhile, the results of the five matches played in the Leguan zone are: Young Warriors defeated all and sundry and were subsequently crowned Leguan Champions. In their first match, they defeated Snipers XI by 11 runs.
The Young Warriors batted first and scored 71-9 in their 10 overs despite Rick Stevens’ top bowling figures of 4-13 from 2 overs. Tyrone Ali (20) took the batting honours for the winners.
In reply, Snipers XI were dismissed for 60-7 in their 10 overs. Andy Narine picked up 2- 12 from 2 overs while Satnarine Jatar took 2-15 also from 2 overs.
In the second match of the day, West End XI squeezed past Hustlers XI by 3 runs after the former team batted first and scored 78-4 in their allotted 10 overs. Harvey Heeralall top scored with 32 with support from Kevon Gordon who lashed an unbeaten 28. In reply, Hustlers XI were limited to 75 when their overs ran out. Franz Ramnarine (28) took the batting honours while Gordon (2-7 from 2 overs) and Andy Partab (2-11 from 2 overs) took the bowling credits.
Melville XI drew the bye in the first round but lost to Young Warriors XI in the semi-finals 32 runs.
Young Warriors batted first and scored a challenging 95-5 in their 10 overs with Bryan Murray scoring 21 (2×6) and Muneshwar Jatan 15.
The best bowler for Melville XI was Haseeb Khan (2-17 from 2 overs).
Rabindra Chowtie then took 4-19 from 2 overs with support from Bryan Murray who chipped in with 2-7 from his 2 overs to restrict Melville XI to 63 all out in their 10 overs.
Haseeb Khan (19) was the only batsman to offer any resistance. Young Warriors returned in the finals to destroy West End XI by 44 runs which earned them the Leguan leg of the tournament. They pocketed fifteen thousand dollars and a beautiful trophy while the losing finalist received five thousand dollars.
The man of the match in the final as well as the most valuable player of the tournament both received beautiful trophies.
The action moves over to Hogg Island this morning at 09:00hrs where several teams will vie for the top prize.
