Guyana’s High Commissioner to the UK, Laleshwar Singh, has commended the Guyana Law Association (GLA) of the United Kingdom (UK) for sending law books and materials to the Courts and the University of Guyana.
Singh said the shipment of law books, law reports and other legal materials sent by the Association comes at an opportune time for the UG Law Department and its students, who will now be able to supplement their research from a large collection of legal texts obtained from a disparate group of legal institutions and private individuals in the UK.
The University’s collection of books was depleted by floods in recent years and students are very much at a disadvantage in the very restricted access to legal source publications.
The Law Department’s needs were highlighted when one of the GLA (UK)’s founder members, Colin Bobb-Semple recently visited the Department and had discussions with the Head of the Law Faculty, Mrs Elias-Roberts and her staff including the Librarian, Mrs Gwyneth George.
The latest shipment by the Association includes legal textbooks, law journals and law reports sent to the Honourable Chancellor of the Court of Appeal, Justice Carl Singh, for dissemination within the Court Service.
This continues the series of shipments over the years, which have contributed to the law library of the Supreme Court, regarded as an outstanding source of legal materials for reference and research.
The outlying courts have also benefited from stocks of law reports and practitioners’ texts. Over £1million of law books and legal materials have so far been shipped to Guyana by the Guyana Law Association (UK).
The Association was formed in September 2002 after a visit by the then Chancellor Desiree Bernard, when she addressed the Diaspora lawyers (at a meeting arranged under the auspices of the UK High Commissioner) and asked them to assist the justice system in Guyana by collecting and transporting donated law books and computers.
Since then, with encouragement and assistance from the High Commissioner, several shipments of books and computers have been sent to Guyana.
The Acting Chancellor, Carl Singh, has also addressed the GLA (UK) a few times over the years and he has expressed his deep appreciation for the books and computers sent. The books are housed in the Supreme Court’s Library, the Law Library in Berbice, the Courts in the provinces and also the University of Guyana. They are available for use by all practitioners and students.
