Cocaine bust at city wharf…
As the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) continues its investigation into the recent drug bust at a city wharf, one person is still being sought for questioning.
Initially, two persons were arrested following the discovery of the cocaine which weighed some two kilograms. However this newspaper has since been informed that the two persons have since been released in keeping the correct procedures. No charges have been instituted on them and the stipulated 72 hours of being detained has elapsed. Hence the men were released.
In the meantime, another person whom CANU had expressed interest in questioning in relation to the bust has turned himself in with his lawyer, while another individual is being sought.
As the investigations continue, the file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
On Friday night, last, acting on information received, CANU ranks intercepted nearly three kilos of pure compressed cocaine, destined for Jamaica.
Kaieteur News was told that the ranks arrived at a city wharf around 23:40 hrs on Friday.
A subsequent search of a container vessel revealed two packets of cocaine. This publication was told that after the drugs were found, two stevedores were arrested and taken into custody.
With all the penalties attached to drug smuggling, persons are finding innovative ways to export drugs. Over the past month or so, almost 20 persons have been brought before the courts for trying to export cocaine and marijuana.
