While the traditional announcement of National Awardees was not made at this year’s flag-raising ceremony, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon has not ruled out the annual presentation.
Speaking at yesterday’s weekly post-Cabinet press briefing, Dr. Luncheon said that because some statutory members of the Selection Committee had departed, it had to be re-constituted. Nevertheless, the selection process has begun.
He said that the reconstituted committee is culling the list of submissions made by the public. At the end of the process, the list would be presented to the President with the names of those who have been recommended, and the committee’s views on who should receive what award.
According to Dr. Luncheon when the President receives the list, he would consider their submission and would advise the nation on the identities of the persons on whom the awards would be conferred.
“The practice has been that on October 5, the recipients would receive their awards at a special ceremony,” said the Cabinet Secretary. While he acknowledged that the major opportunities (Republic and Independence Days) have passed for the announcements to be made, he pointed out that they are not the sole opportunities for doing so.
“Once the information is there and the process is completed, there is nothing to prevent an announcement being made and an activity planned for the conferring these awards,” Dr. Luncheon concluded.
