Sharma sex probe PI adjourned again
Embattled television station owner, Chandra Narine Sharma, made yet another court appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates Court for the preliminary inquiry into the carnal knowledge charge against him.
Former Attorney General Doodnauth Singh has been retained to prosecute the matter.
Magistrate Lovell has adjourned the matter for June 2.
On the last occasion the defence had made an application for certified copies of Sharma’s passport to be made available.
Lead attorney for Sharma, Nigel Hughes, had said that Sharma’s passport is an essential part of the defence.
Days later in a letter to the press, the DPP said that the only reason the defence wanted the passport was because Sharma wanted to travel to Canada.
The DPP had said that the passport was a brand new machine readable one with a Canadian visa. However Nigel Hughes denied that his client wanted to leave the jurisdiction.
Over a month ago, the victims aged five, nine, 18 and 21, as well as a cousin, aged 12, came forward with the allegation that Sharma had sexually assaulted them.
Sharma and five of his associates were also charged with obstructing the course of justice, when they allegedly hid the girl’s mother to prevent the police from locating her.
