Police special constable, Denita Vanderburgh, 34, of Reliance Settlement, East Canje, Berbice, was yesterday granted $50,000 bail, when she appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on the charge of Dereliction of Duty by a Peace Officer.
The woman who is attached to the Reliance Police Station is accused of allowing a prisoner to escape.
Prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram stated that on March 16, last, while being a Peace Officer at the Reliance Police Station, Vanderburgh voluntarily and intentionally permitted one Chetram Singh, a prisoner at the time and who was being held on a charge of simple larceny, to escape.
Singh, 26, a Deportee, had escaped from the Reliance station lock ups at around 01:30 hrs on the day in question.
A known felon, Singh was arrested after he was found in possession of a stolen electrical generator. It was alleged that he had broken out of the facility, but a closer examination by senior investigators revealed that one board approximately four to five inches was missing.
This observation by senior investigators brought some suspicions which led to the two ranks that were at the station being arrested.
The senior investigators had doubt that the man could have slipped through such a small space. The two were placed on open arrest and allowed to work.
Singh was later recaptured and under interrogation, had told investigators that he did not escape, but gave the officers $35,000 for his release and that the breakout was a concoction.
Meanwhile, the other person involved in the saga, the neighbourhood policeman, Deonarine Rambarrath, called “Watrash” was not charged, but investigations are continuing and he may be disciplined soon.
The matter has been transferred to the Reliance Magistrate’s Court for June 16.
