– application already in
The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) has applied for a renewal of its 20-year licence which comes to an end this year, but ongoing negotiations on liberalising the sector will determine how telecommunications in Guyana will be in the coming years.
According to outgoing Chief Executive Officer, Major General (rtd), Joe Singh, already the company has applied for its licence to be renewed for a further 20 years.
The ongoing negotiations are being handled by the Office of the President and the Director of Telecommunications, the CEO said last Wednesday during a press conference at the company’s upper Brickdam offices.
The renewal application is a formality, he said.
At the end of the 1980s, the Guyana Government decided to privatise telecommunications as part of its broader reform programme.
In 1990, US-based Atlantic TeleNetwork acquired 80 percent of the telephone company and the
Government retained 20. GT&T commenced operations on January 28, 1991.
In recent years, government has been moving to free up the telecommunication sector which GT&T had controlled since in the early 1990s.
The entrance of DIGICEL to the local market has seen a renewed move in this direction and new legislations are being drafted.
