Twenty-year-old New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) student, Rondel Simmons, who was involved in a serious accident around 03:00 hrs Sunday morning when his motor cycle (CD 8052) collided with a cow at the junction of Main Street and Shoe Lane, New Amsterdam, has died.
The young man succumbed to his injuries yesterday.
According to relatives, Simmons, of 161 Bermine Housing Scheme, and a second year welding student at the New Amsterdam Technical Institute, would have celebrated his 21st birthday on Tuesday.
He was also a prominent member of the New Amsterdam United football club.
Simmons was on his way home when he collided with the stray animal on the road. He was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, before being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died around 06:00 hrs yesterday.
He had regained consciousness, but could not talk since he had sustained a broken jaw. His arm was broken in two places.
Rondel Simmons who is the only child for his mother Jillian Simmons, a policewoman, had two other siblings via his father Mark Fraser, Domain and Jaleel. His death came as a surprise, since according to his mother and his uncle Kirk Fraser, a teacher, Rondel was showing signs of improvement.
He was responding to all his treatment and should have started to eat solid. He was breathing on his own. His mother said that she was preparing to go to the hospital for the six o clock visit when she received a call that his condition had worsened, by the time she got to the hospital he had died.
They are not too sure what caused his relapse and sudden death and we are hoping the post mortem examination would tell the reason.
Rondel Simmons was preparing to write the Guyana Technical Education Examination in June and his family was looking forward to good things from him. He was described as a humble, quiet and simple person and easy to get along with. He was very jovial and respectable.
