Stifling and unrelenting heat is what patients of the Maternity Ward of the Linden Hospital Complex have had to endure for the past three weeks, as a result of the broken air conditioning unit.
According to reliable sources, more than a week after the air-conditioning system ‘collapsed,’ a belt was replaced as it was claimed that this was the problem.
However, that was just a temporary ‘fix’ as within two days it was back to square one, as the new belt buckled and burnt under the pressure, it was reported.
Both patients and staff of the maternity ward are suffering as the few windows are very small and do not allow for a free flow of fresh air.
This situation is not good for either the patients or their babies, the nurses said. It is even worse for those persons who had to undergo surgeries. These patients are more susceptible to infection in hot conditions, a senior hospital staff reported.
However, if infection does take place, none would be the wiser until between three to seven days, it was claimed.
Throughout the ward patients have either installed their own fans or have made contrived ones from books, papers etc. But still the cry that reverberated throughout the ward was, “This place hot!”
And it was hot, even though it was raining. One patient exclaimed, “This place so hot we can’t even sleep.”
Others nodded in unison. They said that they could neither sleep at night or day because of the intense heat.
Maternity staffers are meanwhile contemplating ‘downing tools’ if this situation is not rectified soon, as working in the heat is ‘downright intolerable!’
Efforts to secure a comment from the hospital’s administration proved futile.
