Seventeen year-old West Indies female cricketer Shemaine Campbelle less than 24 hours after returning from the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup honoured 60 outstanding mothers at the Area “H” Ground, office of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC).
Ms. Campbelle who played in the World Cup games as wicketkeeper, leg spinner and batter, organised the event with her teammates of the Rose Hall Town Pepsi Under-19, Bakewell Second Division and Gizmos & Gadgets Under-23 teams as an appreciative gesture for playing for the Region at the highest level.
She told the mothers that she was grateful to be a member of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club as it has allowed her to be disciplined, focused and to be a role model to others. Ms. Campbelle who was named National Junior Runner-up Sports Woman for 2009 noted that representing the West Indies was a dream come true and playing in the World Cup was an experience that would remain with her forever.
RHTY&SC Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster congratulated Ms. Campbell for being a remarkable ambassador, not only for her club but also for Berbice and Guyana.
He challenged Ms. Campbelle to remain disciplined at all times and praised her and her teammates for organising the programme to honour the mothers as a Post-Mothers Day tribute and also as a thank you gesture to God for Guiding her along the way.
The long serving administrator also praised the mothers for being excellent parents and called on them to continue to teach their children about the importance of obedience, respect for elders, the value of education and the virtue of honesty and self respect.
Foster also announced that in the future, all cricketers from the RHTY&SC would require organising a community project once they gain selection to the West Indies team. This would be a way of expressing gratitude and at the same time teaching them the importance of keeping their feet firmly on the ground.
Campbelle also honoured three senior citizens of Rose Hall Town – Ms. Olive Batson, Mrs. Millicent Trim and Ms. Lucille Brusche who have recently attained the milestone of 90 years. Each were presented with a Ricks & Sari hamper and offered wishes for continued good health and happiness.
Mrs. Denise Leow-Babb, a mother of seven speaking on behalf of the mothers expressed gratitude to Campbelle, her teammates and the RHTY&SC for making them feel special. She praised the Management of the Club for guiding the young cricketers along the correct path and teaching them the importance of serving others and being grateful to God for every achievement.
The mothers were all treated at a special luncheon, a cultural presentation and received gift packages worth $8,000 each.
