In observance of National Truancy Day under the theme “Every Child has a right to be educated”, the community of Bartica carried out a massive campaign on May 18, and 23 children were picked up between the target areas of Byderabo and the Bartica/Potaro Road.
The team responsible for this campaign included the Regional Probation Officer Jocelyn Gomes, Representative of the Women’s Affairs Committee and Counselor; Khan, Welfare Officers Zulfikar Hack and Mareilyn Wyatt; Nurse Nichola Anderson; Police Officer Sears; Regional Information Officer Cianna Persaud; and Griffin from the Bartica Policing Group.
The welfare officers issued two warning letters to serious cases and two cases were referred to the probation officer for further action.
However, checks began from yesterday to see if the children were attending school to further their education in accordance with the response of parents to the various officers.
This campaign is ongoing in all the regions of Guyana with its agenda on a strong message to parents of the importance of education and the consequences should a child be denied same. In Region Seven, attendance is checked monthly in all schools but it is still a sore point.
Coming out of this campaign, parents and children were educated on the importance and seriousness of child welfare through counseling at the Bartica Research Centre, One Mile Bartica/Potaro Road.
