Central New Amsterdam Boxing Gym (CNABG) which is one of the newest in the country, having being formed about two months ago is preparing for its first national engagement.
The Gym which is the brain child of Former national Amateur and Professional boxing champion Jeff Roberts is preparing to send four boxers to the national boxing championship to be held in Georgetown on Sunday.
According to Roberts the up coming competition will be a good test for his charges since most of them are raw and have only started boxing when the gym was founded.
The boxers will be participating in a competition for the first time and are eager to show their skills.
Roberts, who won multiple titles at both the Amateur and professional levels, said that he sees a lot of talent in the young fighters and is positive that they will go a far way. The GYM is based at the Central Police Station and the fighters utilize the Central Police Recreational Centre. The Club recently held a one day exhibition featuring boxers from the club and from that showing Roberts believed that his charges are getting ready for the big encounters.
Roberts, a Berbician now back home from the USA, serves as the president and CEO of the organisation and has teamed up with a few former boxers and boxing enthusiast to form the gym which is the second in Berbice. He is also a qualified coach in both the USA and Guyana.
Roberts is high in praise for Station Sergeant Jairam Ramlakhan and Sergeant Forbes Brown whom he said was instrumental in securing the venue for them and is helping with transportation to take the boxers to Georgetown. He was also high in praise for business men Shane Lindie of Time Line Internet Café and Peter Lewis of Peter Lewis Construction who has assisted greatly with securing uniforms and gear for the boxers.
Roberts is a Vice President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) with special responsibility for Berbice.
