East Coast clothes vendor paid with counterfeit US dollars
An Enterprise, East Coast Demerara businesswoman sold $50, 000 in clothing to two men yesterday, only to receive the payment in counterfeit US dollars.
Sally Persaud of Lot 272 Enterprise said that around 07:30 hrs, she was putting out clothes for sale when a dark-green car stopped and two men emerged asking the price for the jeans.
She said that she gave the price and the men asked for 15 jeans, along with four blouses and two dresses.
Persaud said that the men claimed they were purchasing the clothes to retail back in Barbados. The items amounted to $50,000. However, she said the men said they did not have Guyana dollars and asked if she would accept US dollars – US$250.
However, when the car pulled off, she said she became suspicious and decided to ask a neighbour if she could identify counterfeit money. The neighbour told her to check with a money changer in the village, and this she did.
Persaud said the money changer told her she had collected counterfeit money and should report the matter to the Police.
The woman said she reported the matter to the Vigilance Police Station and gave the number plate of the car, PJJ 9752, in the hope that the scamps would be caught.
