Official logo of CAC Rugby Sevens unveiled
- GT&T Cellink to spearhead promotion of events
Attended by members of the Organising Committee, representatives of GT&T Cellink and players from defending Caribbean champions Guyana, the official logo of the Central American & Caribbean Games Rugby Sevens Tournament was unveiled yesterday, at the National Park.
Events Co-ordinator Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento, who heads the Committee told the gathering that included GT&T’s Wanita Hubern and Abena Fung, Sevens Director Mike McCormack and the media, the hosting of the CAC Sevens Championship provided many firsts for Guyana.
Nascimento, who also heads the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), said that among them was the fact that it will be the first time that the CAC Games of any kind will be hosted in Guyana and it will be the first time that the sport of rugby will be played at the National Stadium.
According to the GRFU President, the logo was designed by overseas-based Guyanese designer Bernard Ramsey, who currently resides in Florida, USA and he willingly undertook to volunteer his services in arriving at the design.
The other teams scheduled to participate in the tournament to be played from July 17-18 are Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Mexico, Venezuela and tentatively Costa Rica, who it was disclosed is the team identified to replace Colombia.
Nascimento added that the NACRA Women’s Sevens will follow the completion of the CAC event and after that the Men’s segment will be played with the winner of the latter automatically qualifying for the IRB World Sevens Series next year.
Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of GT&T whose responsibility will be to spearhead the promotion of the tournaments, Hubern first congratulated the Union for doing a splendid job with the sport, adding that they’ve managed to do so quietly.
She said that with football and cricket being the main disciplines on the local sports agenda, the Union has been able to accomplish significant accolades despite not being in the mainstream.
Hubern also extended congratulations to the teams for their success and even sought to assure fans that the Company will be doing all in its power to make the occasion a really big and special one for all.
That will include consistent promotions before and during the staging of the tournaments as well as other attractions for the fans.
She urged parents to bring their children out to the Stadium to watch and support the championships and more importantly rally around the local teams.
Hubern also recognised the sterling contributions made by persons such as Major General Retired Joe Singh, Marketing Executive Wystan Robertson and other influential employees of the Telephone Company which continues to be the major supporter of the Union and the sport.
