In a recent speech to the National Assembly on the matter of unemployment, Basil Williams, opposition counterpart to Minister of Labour Manzoor Nadir, said that there exists a real need for the government to place more emphasis on tackling the issue of unemployment in the country.
Minister Nadir, in a recent statement, however contended that there has been no increase in the number of unemployed and the government is in fact doing its utmost to work towards the creation of jobs for all Guyanese.
Williams quoted figures that were apparently used in the budget presentations. He stated that these clearly indicated an increase in the figures of unemployment.
He then proceeded to extrapolate the two numbers to give a current figure of unemployment that rests at some 42,000 persons.
According to Williams, there were 31,072 persons without jobs in 2002 while in 2006 that number was 28,024, and that “since no recent survey has been done, it is evident that more jobs have been lost and more persons added to the ranks of the unemployed. It is safe to say that the figure for the jobless could be around 42,000.”
Nadir offered by way of a statement on Williams’s speech pointed out that he refutes the opposition’s claims that unemployment figures have risen over the last two years and that the Government’s job-led growth strategy has actually contributed to a ‘swelling of the ranks’ of the employed.
According to Nadir a decrease in population coupled with an increase of jobs could not lead to a rise in the unemployment figures as Williams had pointed out. “Williams is like Don Quixote, tilting at windmills””.
Minister Nadir also pointed out that the placement figures for the Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency have shown an average increase over the past four years while the number of vacancies being listed with the agency has also shown a significant increase.
He took the opportunity to also point out that workers need to train and retrain since many of the vacancies lodged with the Agency call for skill sets that are not readily available.
The need for workers to be willing to move to where the jobs are located was also touched upon by Nadir in his statement.
