The Recently formed Central New Amsterdam Boxing Gym (CNABG) is moving full speed ahead with their boxing programme. The GYM which was formed just over a month ago, recently in collaboration with the Central Police station recently held a successful one day boxing extravaganza at their training centre at the Central Police Station recreational centre.
Former professional and amateur boxing champion Berbician Jeff Roberts, now back home from the USA, is the brain child behind the formation of the club. Roberts, who is the president and CEO of the organisation, team up with a few former boxers and boxing enthusiast to form the gym which is the second in Berbice.
Before the exhibition bouts were staged there was a grand opening ceremony which was attended by a number of dignitaries in the Ancient County including New Amsterdam Mayor Claude Henry, businessmen and a number of senior Police and Army officials.
Prayers were said before Mayor Henry declared open the event. The Mayor praised Roberts and the other officials for taking their time and effort in helping to guide the youngsters.
The benefits from which he said can only be good. More initiatives like this should be undertaken to help rid the society of the scourge of social ills which is quickly engulfing our society, the Mayor noted.
Mayor Henry was also in high praise for Station Sergeant Jairam Ramlakhan, who he said is doing a Herculean task when it comes to Police Community relationship. The Mayor noted that the sergeant is well placed in what he is doing. He noted, “If we have more officers like sergeant Ramlakhan, then I am sure we will have less crime.”
Sergeant Ramlakhan who has Certificates in International Human Rights and Humanitarian law in Jamaica and Police Administration from Barbados was instrumental in the boxers getting the usage of the facility.
Some seven exhibition bouts were held which showcased the talents of the youngsters, some of whom were fighting for the first time.
The bout saw siblings Joel and Jamal Williamson matching gloves. Travis Fraser taking on Narendra Jaundoo; Michael April tangling with Kevin Williams; Jermaine Profitt coming up against Kellon Cadogan; Zuma Bovell matching skill with Raymond Henry; Joshua Outar trading punches with Nicolas Phillips, the final encounter pitted policeman Chumumba Cipio verses Kelly Cadogan. The boxers were required to fight three two minutes rounds each.
There were no winners, but the fighters all received accolades which include trophies and medals for their efforts.
The boxing exhibition according to sergeant Ramlakhan was part of the force’s effort in getting involved in community and outreach activity. It also forms part of a series of activities to launch the facility. Already a Cricket competition was held at the facility, while football, Volleyball and some more activities are also on the cards.
Coach Roberts who was former champion in multiple divisions both as an amateur and professional boxer and is a Vice President with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), said that the event served his club well as the boxers got the opportunity to test their skills in an actual boxing setting and see how prepared they are.
Roberts, who is a qualified Coach both in Guyana and in the USA, said he was well pleased with how things went. According to Roberts the coaches are also put through their paces as he tries to keep them abreast with modern techniques and training. Roberts said what he is doing gives him much pleasure since it helps him to give back in a big way to society and the community from which he honed his skills. He is even happier to be imparting his knowledge in his home town.
