Mere hours after he was released from the Georgetown Public Hospital, a man was remanded to prison on a charge of obtaining money by false pretence.
The accused, Prem Persaud, appeared before Acting Chief Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that between December 7, 2009 and January 9, 2010, with intent to defraud Chetram Banswaru, Persaud told him that he was in a position to acquire a house lot for him at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara. He collected the sum of $820,000.
Prem Persaud was jointly charged with one Sunita Singh.
At the beginning of March, Singh was read her charge. Initially she pleaded not guilty but subsequently changed her plea to guilty. On April 7 last she was sentenced to two years imprisonment.
Persaud was absent when the case was first called after the court was told that he had ingested gramozone. Yesterday, he told the court that he ingested the poison because of a dispute he had with his sister.
He pleaded not guilty, but indicated to the court that he was willing to repay half of the money since he did not take that amount from Banswaru.
Prem Persaud also told the court that it was Singh who took the money from the victim.
He said that he will be able to come up with the money by Monday.
He was then informed that he will have to discuss the issue of repaying Banswaru with the prosecutor. He was remanded and is expected to make his next court appearance on Tuesday.
The duo had reportedly taken the money from Banswaru while pretending that they were employees from the Ministry of Housing. The accused also put the VC to talk with someone who pretended to be the Housing Minister on the telephone and the ‘Minister’ instructed the VC to hand over the money.
