The Secretary General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), His Excellency Edwin Carrington has been accorded a national honour by the Kingdom of Spain.
His Majesty the King of Spain has authorised the conferment of the Commander of Number of the Order of Civil Merit of Spain on Mr Carrington and the ceremony will take place in Kingston, Jamaica on Tuesday, 23 March, 2010, during a reception at the official Residence of the Spanish Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Jesus Silva.
Spain ’s Minister of State for Latin America and the Caribbean, His Excellency Juan Pablo de Laiglesia, will preside over the conferment which, according to the citation is in recognition of the Secretary-General’s years of service to CARICOM and to the process of regional integration in the Caribbean, a process that has received the support of Spain. The honour is also in recognition of the esteem in which he is held for ensuring the strengthening of the relations between Spain and CARICOM.
Both Mr Carrington and Senor de Laiglesia will be in Kingston to attend the Senior Officials Meeting of the Caribbean Forum of African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group and the European Union (EU), which will take the form of a Political Dialogue. It is one of the meetings preparatory to the Summit of Heads of Government of the two Regional organisations to be held in Madrid, Spain in May. Among areas to be discussed at the meeting on Tuesday are Caribbean – European co-operation in the reconstruction of Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 12 January, Climate Change and other challenges facing Caribbean development.
The CARIFORUM officials will meet on Monday 22, March, in preparation for Tuesday’s meeting with the Europeans.
