With less than a week to go before the kick off of group ‘D’ rivalry in the 2010 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Champions League Qualifying competition, host club Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United is promising that their opponents will not be allowed to impose their will, rather the ‘Hammer’ will be stalling the progress of both visiting clubs.
Bath Estate, the Club Champions of Dominica will be facing Alpha in the opening game next Wednesday at the GCC Ground Bourda. Like Alpha who lost their first round home and away tie last year to Tempete FC of Haiti, the Dominicans did not fare any better as they were sent packing at this stage also by Trinidad and Tobago’s W Connection, 0-5 and 1-12.
Bath Estate will arrive in Guyana on Monday boasting several National team players and from all reports are aiming to do better this year but will find the ‘Hammer’ a tough opponent.
The other team in the group, Walking Boys of Suriname will be here on Wednesday in time for their first game against Bath Estate next Friday at the same venue, the final game of the group features Alpha United and Walking Boys on Sunday March 28.
In an effort to be in the best possible shape technically, tactically and physically, Alpha have been training for the past two months and have sought out the services of a number of Jamaican players who are on trials, presently. Five of these players are already in Guyana with another expected in today.
Club President Odinga Lumumba had indicated at a press conference on Saturday last at the water Chris Hotel that a Brazilian player, who was on the Alpha roster before, will also be considered for the final squad.
With Guyana playing host to a number of Regional and International events, this weekend, the 4th Annual International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF) Caribbean Islands Bench Press & Powerlifting Championships at Princess Hotel starting today, sports lovers can look forward another top quality event beginning next Wednesday at the GCC Ground, Bourda.
The group winners, runners-up and best third-place team will advance to the second round along with seeded sides, Puerto Rico Islanders, Tempete FC of Haiti and San Juan Jabloteh of Trinidad and Tobago. Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago will host two groups each.
