Chanderpaul not included
Six Berbicians and six players from Demerara have been named in a 14-man Guyana squad to participate in this year’s Regional under-15 cricket tournament which is set for Trinidad from March 28 to April 5.
While Berbician Adrian Amsterdam and Essequibian Elroy Stephney have retained their positions of Coach and Manager respectively, an official GCB release yesterday did not indicate a Captain or deputy for the team which was picked after Berbice beat defending champions Demerara in the Inter-County under-15 final round match at DCC on Tuesday.
However, Berbice skipper Shawn Pereira who looked a very good leader should be named captain while Essequibo Captain Ricardo Adams could be his deputy.
The highly talented Demerara under-15 skipper Brian Sattaur is among the most talented under-15 batsmen in the region and he is expected to lead the batting on what should be slow spin-friendly pitches.
Berbice unorthodox left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie Kanhai should spearhead the bowling attack in his 4th year at this level, while fellow left-arm spinner Devon Lord could be the perfect foil for the attacking Motie-Kanhai with his defensive style.
Dexter George should spearhead the fast bowling department as Guyana hunt their first ever under-15 title since this level of Regional cricket began in 1996.
Demerara under-15 batsmen Tagenarine Chanderpaul, the left-handed son of Test batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, is among six standbys named. While his batting is generally rock solid and he usually occupies the crease for long periods, his temperament is not ideal for limited overs cricket as he put pressure on the other batsmen with the amount of dot balls he faces.
The 13-year-old Chanderpaul made 49 in 49 overs in Essequibo and 16 from 83 balls in the final match against Berbice and many feel that he has all the potential to follow in the footsteps of his illustrious father later in his career and it is hoped that more two-innings youth cricket is organized to develop players with the ‘Chanderpaul temperament’ for more Test players to be produced.
The other standbys are Herry Greene, Nazirdin Bux, Ryan Chichester, Raj Parbattie and Shimron Hetmyer.
The Guyana team read:- Brian Sattaur, Quacy McPherson, Romario DeJonge, Shawn Pereira, Shalendra Shameer, Parmanand Narine, Ricardo Adams, Kamesh Yadram, Prince Roberts, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, Dexter George, Hassan Mohamed, Devon Lord, Vishaal Narayan, Elroy Stephney (Manager), Adrian Amsterdam (Coach)
