Fourteen year-old middle order batsman Parmanand Narine blasted a brilliant undefeated 165 to lead defending Tenelec Inc. Under-15 champions Rose Hall Town Farfan & Mendes (RHTF&M) to an easy 252 run win over Rising Star at the Area “H” ground on Sunday last.
RHTF&M fielded a new look team under new Captain Shawn Perreira with only four players from the victorious 2009 team returning due to the age limit.
The match was reduced to 40 overs due to rain and batting first after winning the toss, the home team slumped to 9-2 in the 2nd over losing openers Nicholas Cameron bowled by Andy Singh and Quincy George run out for a duck.
Skipper Perreira and No. 4 batsman Narine halted the slide with an important 3rd wicket stand of 119 in 14 overs before the aggressive Perreira was bowled by medium pacer Kevin Paltoo for 45 (7 x 4) at 128-3 in the 16th over.
Thirteen year-old Daniel Lewis then joined Narine and together they added 36 for the next wicket before Lewis was caught at extra cover off the nagging Paltoo for 10.
Narine and another 13 year-old, Brandon Prashad then joined forces and blasted the Rising Star bowlers to all parts of the ground putting on an unbeaten 156 for the 5th wicket as RHTF&M finished on 320-4 off their allotted 40 overs.
Narine ended on 165 not out (20 fours and a six) while the impressive Prashad was unbeaten on 42. Bowling for Rising Star, Paltoo took 2-48 off 7 overs.
Needing to score 8 runs per over to record an upset victory, the visitors were never in the hunt as medium pacer Rayon Mootoo took the first 5 wickets to reduce them to 25-5 by over number 8. Rising Star never recovered and were eventually bowled out for 68 in 23.4 overs. Only Paltoo with a patient 24 offered any resistance as leg spinner Perreira and left arm spinner Kumar Madray ran through the tail. Mootoo ended with 5-16 off 6 overs while Madray took 3-10 (4 overs) and Perreira 2-2 off 3 overs. Extras contributed a healthy 28.
