Demerara defeated Essequibo by 61 runs in the opening game of the Castrol Inter Country U-15 50 overs cricket competition played yesterday at Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast.
Essequibo won the toss and asked Demerara to bat first after the game was reduced to 45 overs due to seepage on the pitch.
The visitors were reduced to 66-5 before Kamesh Yadram, who top scored with 64 (1×6, 1×4) and Prince Roberts (18) added 43 for the 7th wicket partnership taking the score to 109. Dexter George 19 and Chandreka Persaud 15 were the next best scorers and Demerara reached 198-9 when their overs expired.
Hassan Mohamed was the pick of the home team bowlers with arm spinner Herry Green taking 2-24 from 9 overs and Hemant Kowshaldeo 2-34 from 7. Skipper Ricardo Adams and Moin Khan also took one wicket each.
Essequibo in reply managed 137 all out in 44.3 overs. Raj Parbattie and Tameshwar Dhanpaul were their leading run getters with 22 each, while Mark Gonsalves made 18 and Herry Green 17.
Offspinner Vishaul Narayan bagged 4-25 off 8 overs and Dexter George 3-13 from 7.2 for the winners.
The competition continues today with both teams facing each other in their second game at the same venue. (Zaheer Mohamed)
