We need to open up the competition to Caribbean Airlines

Dear Editor,
I have noted the Secretary of the Cabinet, Dr Roger Luncheon’s remarks about the exploitation to which we Guyanese have been subjected to by Caribbean Airlines. Dr Luncheon was commenting directly on the fare structure of the airline but the exploitation does not end there.
I am a businessman who has reason to travel very regularly to New York accompanied by my wife for almost 30 years. We have both earned frequent flyer membership. I have made it my practice to use Caribbean Airlines because I felt that we should support our CARICOM affiliates. The attitude of their staff, however, especially when they interact with Guyanese leaves very much to be desired. I have noticed that they have a very different and positive behaviour when other nationalities are involved.
An incident from my last trip to NY on 11th February, while seemingly trivial illustrates my point. After 1 hour 45 minutes in transit in T&T in the plane, I requested a glass of water from a flight attendant.
She rudely snapped that I would have to wait until we would be in the air. I enquired as to when that would be but she could not say. After a couple of minutes I proceeded to the back of the plane, noticed her chatting with her colleague and asked for the water again.
A supervisor came up and after I explained my request she amazingly said she would report me to the captain if I continued standing. She then called the captain. I returned to my seat because I had no desire to be put off in T&T. I could have drank gallons of water in the time they took to argue with me.
Eventually, when we were in the air (about 45 minutes later) the supervisor came up with the water. I was still so mad I refused it along with their “meal”.
We need to open up the competition to Caribbean Airlines and maybe their attitude to Guyanese will change.
