A Brazilian miner is now seeking medical attention in his homeland for gunshot wounds he sustained during an attack in the Mouise Backdam in Guyana’s interior.
Jose Perriera Llima who is said to be in his mid forties sustained pellet wounds to both of his legs and one of his hands when a man from a group of three persons opened fire on him with a shotgun.
The Brazilian, who is a licenced firearm holder, managed to ward off the men by returning fire.
Divisional Commander David Ramnarine told this newspaper that from the reports he has received, Lima was drinking at a shot not far from his mining operations at around 10:30pm when he saw the three men approaching.
He was unaware that they were coming to him and only realised it when one of the men whipped out a shotgun and shot at him.
Lima returned fire but it is unclear if any of the men were hit as they bolted into the nearby bushes and disappeared.
Police have not established a clear motive for the attack but robbery is suspected, since Lima was carrying a large amount of cash on his person at the time.
The injured Brazilian was initially treated at the Mahdia Health Centre but subsequently chartered an aircraft to Lethem, from where he was transported to Brazil for further medical attention.
