Guyanese players Sudesh Fitzgerald and Jean DeSouza carted off the Men’s and Ladies Singles titles over the weekend as the Guyana Darts Association (GDA) Mashramani Classic Competition concluded at Grand Coastal Inn on the East Coast of Demerara.
The event saw players from Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago in the competition which got started last Friday and end on Sunday.
In results of Day One-
Luck of the Draw Doubles:
Fifteen pairs contested the competition which was played on a knockout format with prizes being awarded to the top four finishers.
The duo of Christopher Amyan and Colin France emerged victorious from Kenneth Greene / Anthony (Barbados) with Jean Singh / (Guyana) / Roger Edwards (Barbados) third and Anil Latchman / Lalchand Rambharose (Guy) bringing up the rear.
In the Open Doubles:
Bajans Kisanka Watts & Clyde Murrell claimed the top spot from countrymen Anthony Braithwaite & Roger Edwards with the Guyanese pair of Hemwattie Amyan & Christopher Lochan third followed by Sudesh Fitzgerald & Anil Latchman.
In Day two results:
Blind Draw Doubles:
Anthony Forde (Bar) & Francis Correia (Guyana) won from Kenneth Greene & Clyde Murrel (Barbados), Dave Gittens (Bar) & Lalchand Rambharose (Guy) and Eloise Martin (Bar) & Anthony Bissoondyal (Guy) in that order.
In the 4-member Team game played on the same day:
The combination of E. Martin/Anthony Braithwaite/Anthony Forde/R. Edwards came home ahead of S. Greene/S. Fitzgerald/R. Van Sluytman/N.Madhoo (Guy), while J. De Souza/A. Latchman/L. Rambharose/V. Dyal (Guy) brought third and S. Skinner/G. Alleyne/D. Innis/C.Murrell/ (Barbados) occupied the final spot.
On Sunday in the Open Doubles:
The pair of L. Rambarose & C. Lochan (Guyana) defeated the duo of R. Edwards & A. Braithwaite (B’dos) with A. Latchman (Guy) & V. Dyal (T’dad) third and Anthony Forde & C. Murrell (Bar) gaining the final prize giving spot.
Ladies Singles sponsored by Hand-in-Hand Insurance Company Ltd:
Jean DeSouza defeated Hemwattie Amyan two games to nil to grab the title, while Barbados’ Elouise Martin and Kisanka Watts were relegated to the minor positions respectively.
In the Men’s version, Sudesh Fitzgerald survived a close contest against multiple times national champion Norman Madhoo, prevailing 4-3 in the final.
Third place went to Anthony Braithwaite of Barbados and he was followed home by Guyanese Anthony Bissoondyal.
In summing up, it was a keenly contested battle between Barbados, Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago where the locals captured most of the prizes.
