Cocaine in wigs…
The driver who was detained in connection with two British Nationals who were found with cocaine in their wigs at the Cheddie Jagan International Airport, Timehri, has been released.
This newspaper was told that the driver who reportedly took the two women to the airport has been released without any charge. Sources close to the investigation have revealed that the man who was detained Tuesday was positively identified by the two women as the person to who took them to the hairdresser and the airport. The hairdresser however remains in custody.
In addition, the two British Nationals, one of whom has been identified as Victoria Hairs have not yet been charged. The duo has been in custody far beyond their stipulated 72 hours, however, it is not clear if any extension has been sought to keep them in custody. On Monday last, one of the women was nabbed by ranks of the Police Narcotics Branch around 10:15 hours while she was about to board an outgoing flight.
She was detained and searched after she was seen acting in a suspicious manner while she was checking in her luggage. She was searched and some 1 kilogram and 26 grams of cocaine was concealed in her wig. Following a brief interrogation, the woman provided the name of another female passenger who had reportedly boarded the same flight she was about to board. Subsequently, the other passenger was held by ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit. She too was found with one kilogram of cocaine hidden in her wig. Up to press time yesterday, she was in the custody of Customs Anti Narcotics Unit. Cocaine being transported in female wigs seems to be a new trend in moving the prohibited substance out of Guyana. Some three weeks ago another woman was caught with cocaine in her wig at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Timehri. She has since been charged and placed before the court. Another woman who was implicated was charged for supplying the cocaine for export.
