The rapid development of Berbice Cricket continued with the National Communications Network (NCN) joining hands with the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) to sponsor the first ever NCN/BCB Under-15 Inter Zone tournament.
The launching of the tournament took place at State House in New Amsterdam during the 3rd Annual Awards Ceremony of the BCB.
Board PRO and Chairman of the Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster disclosed that the tournament will commence after the Berbice Tenelec Inc. Under-15 competition and would be used by the Junior Selection Committee to select the 2010 Under-15 team.
Foster also announced that four teams – West Berbice, New Amsterdam/East Bank/Canje, Lower Corentyne and Central/Upper Corentyne will compete in the tournament which would be played on a one-day, two-innings basis with teams batting 60 overs in the first innings to ensure a result.
West Berbice would clash with New Amsterdam/East Bank/Canje, while Lower Corentyne will battle Central/Upper Corentyne. The winners of the two matches would clash in the final which would be broadcasted live on NCN Radio while the two losing teams would play for third.
It was also announced that the winner would receive educational materials in an effort to get young cricketers to make education the main goal in life.
CEO of NCN, Mohamed Sattaur in handing over the sponsorship Cheque of $178,000 to Board President Keith Foster, said his company was pleased to be associated with Berbice cricket as it is heading in the right direction.
Sports he said, was an important avenue in the development of youths and NCN would continue to support sports in the future. Mr. Sattaur noted that it costs NCN close to US$300,000 to bring cricket each year to the public.
He expressed confidence in the Board’s ability to deliver on its commitment of a successful tournament while encouraging the entity to continue working to expand the game throughout Berbice.
While thanking NCN for coming on board, the BCB also recognised the input of Faizal Jaffarally (NCN – Berbice) and Raymond Azeez for the role they played in cementing the sponsorship.
