Just two days after two inmates at the Georgetown Prisons died violently, the inmates in the Capital Section of the facility went into an uproar early yesterday morning, protesting the fact that the dormitory was without water for a number of days.
Kaieteur News understands that the prisoners asked a prison official for water to flush the two toilets in the dormitory, which houses about 180 inmates.
However, the officers refused.
That was about 10:00pm on Saturday night.
Around 03:00hrs yesterday morning the toilets began to overflow and this prompted the inmates to protest.
After numerous calls were made to the prison officials, the inmates, according to the source, broke off a piece of rotting wood which caused a hole in the wall.
The inmates then shouted that they were going home and bathe if the water situation was not looked after.
Some amount of order was restored after a senior prison official was summoned.
The official spoke to the inmates and promised that their concerns would be looked after.
No one was injured during the uproar yesterday morning.
The source further told Kaieteur News that presently the garbage is overflowing in the prison yard.
The stench emanating from it is affecting the prisoners and although they complained, no one looks into the matter.
Moreover, the source said that an article which was carried in one of the daily newspapers which stated that Blackman and Singh had a scuffle is a total lie. The source was adamant that Singh was sleeping when he was attacked by Blackman.
He explained that persons within the prisons had contacted Singh’s family telling them that they should sue the state because Blackman should have never been mixing with other prisoners.
The source noted that it was a matron in the hospital that deemed Blackman suitable for the Capital Section.
“How could a matron state that Blackman is fine? She does not have any qualifications to deem him fine,” the source said.
It was further stated that another inmate whose mental sanctity is yet to be determined, is mixing with prisoners in the Condemned Section of the Camp Street facility.
Kaieteur News was unable yesterday to solicit a comment from the Director of Prisons, Dale Erskine.
In the wee hours of Friday morning, two prisoners died violently within the capital section of the prison.
Former Tactical Services Unit rank, Solomon Blackman, who shot two policemen dead five years ago and wounded two others, was beaten to death by angry inmates of the Capital Section dormitory.
Minutes earlier, Blackman had clubbed Dawan “Dyal” Singh 49, to death with a piece of wood.
Blackman, of Mocha Arcadia, East Bank Demerara, succumbed to multiple injuries, including broken limbs.
Police and prison officials still have not stated what triggered the attack.
