A robust unbeaten half century by rising off spinning all-rounder and man-of-the match Troy Mathieson batting at No. 9 backed a telling spell of bowling from off spinner Dominic Rickey with figures of 3-17 from 3 overs, guided Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets (RHTG&G) to victory by 41 runs over arch rivals Young Warriors in the final of the inaugural Peter Lewis Construction Services/Berbice Cricket Board Under-23 final on Sunday last at the Area ‘H’ ground, Rose Hall Town Corentyne.
Young Warriors were bowled out for 135 in 31 overs responding to RHTG&G’ 176-8 off 35 overs, the match being reduced from 50 due to overnight and 3early morning showers.
Both Mathieson and Rickey stepped up for their team at critical junctures to ensure that the leading club in Guyana added yet another trophy to their already bulging collection and the champions cheque of $50,000; Young Warriors who lost wickets at regular intervals having to settle for the runner-up prize of $30,000 and trophy.
The home team RHTG&G won the toss and opted to take first strike on a good pitch offering some bounce to the bowlers in very windy conditions. The opening pair of Clinton Pestano (17; 3×4) and Rickey (13; 2×4) added 32 for the first wicket before Pestano was the first to trek back to the pavilion comprehensively bowled by pacer Jermaine Henry who went on to account for the next two batsmen (Rickey & Captain Eon Hooper) to leave RHTG&G on 49-3.
Hooper only mustered 3 before being snapped in the slips by Henry. Number three batsman Jason Sinclair was joined by Shawn Pereira and the two took the score to 78 before Sinclair was taken by wicketkeeper Seon Hetmyer for 20 compiled from 39 balls with a solitary boundary.
Loyyden Lewis then partnered Pereira and the two added another 22 runs, taking the score to 100 before Lewis was stumped by Hetmyer off the bowling of off spinner Farouk Hussein for 10. Pereira was to suffer the same fate as Lewis 2 runs later, 102-6. With no addition to the score, Damien Van Tull became the 3rd batsman to be stumped by Hetmyer off Hussein for 0.
But that was the last success for Young Warriors as Mathieson and Trevon Thomas joined forces to left their team from a precarious position to one of comfort as the two added an unbroken 74; Mathieson running riot with the bat to end unbeaten on a deserved 50 with Thomas on 7.
Hussein (3-43 from 7 overs) came in for a severe beating in the penultimate over which went for 24 runs, Mathieson lashing 3 sixes and a four. Henry also ended with 3-23 from 6 overs with one wicket each for Samuel Baker and Richard Ramdeen.
Needing to score 177 to win from 35 overs, lost the experienced Ramdeen for 4 with the score on 5 but Wahied Edwards (30) and Seon Hetmyer (15) lifted the visitors with a compact 2nd wicket stand of 63 which gave them a real chance of challenging for victory.
But with the departure of Edwards, Young Warriors lost focus with wickets falling at regular intervals thereafter as the Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets bowlers never let the batsmen settle into any sort of rhythm.
The only other batsmen to get into double figures were N0. 4 Farouk Hussein (24) and the last man out Reeaz Kassim (35) batting at number 6, holding out to the only female cricketer in the Ancient County playing at the junior level among males, Shemaine Campbell who took a great catch coming off the square leg boundary with two of her teammates also challenging.
Rickey capped a fine all round display with bat and ball ending with 3-17; well supported by Captain eon Hooper (2-12), Shawn Pereira (2-18) with Clinton Pestano and Loyyden Lewis snatching one apiece. The champions said they were dedicating the win to Mr. and Mrs. Ravi Mangar as well as the staff of Gizmos and Gadgets.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony which was attended by wife and daughter of the sponsor, Diana and Retika Lewis, Berbice Cricket Board Treasurer Anil Beharry complimented Peter Lewis Construction Services for the foresight exhibited in sponsoring the Under-23 tournament which served to bridge gap between the Under-19 and senior levels.
Beharry noted that the competition brought with it a high level of rivalry with players from all the levels having the opportunity to exhibit their skills. He congratulated Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets for their win.
BCB PRO Hilbert Foster also complimented the sponsor and all the teams for participating while informing the gathering that Berbice cricket will be exciting in 2010.
“We will be playing at the Under-13, 15, 17, 19, 2nd division and senior levels this year. Shortly we will be unveiling the IPA 50 overs tournament which will be big and exciting and will see a massive show with a live band at the final.” The new BCB season is expected to bowl off next week.
