A security guard who reported for work on Sunday night discovered that a fire had been set in the lower flat of the Dorothy Bailey Municipal Health Centre on South Road.
This newspaper was told that the discovery was made sometime around 21:00 hours on Sunday evening while the security guard was making routine checks around the building.
Reports reaching this newspaper revealed that several louvre window panes were seen opened and the walls of the building were scorched. Following the discovery, several senior officials from the Municipal Complex were immediately called in.
The security guard on duty at the time reported that no strange noise was heard nor no strange person was seen in the compound.
As such, no one could say when exactly the fire was set to the building.
Sources close to the organisation told this newspaper that the fire was set in the office of the Senior Environmental Officers.
This newspaper was also told that ranks from the Guyana Fire Service visited the scene early this morning to do preliminary investigation. Reports are that their investigation revealed that the fire was the work of an arsonist. This newspaper was also informed that pieces of cloth which does not appear to be the same material which the window curtains were made of were found in the office soak with a flammable substance.
Meanwhile, the officials at the South Road location are still trying to access their losses, but one source said that the damages are not much. A wall, a writing desk, a chair and a few curtains were damaged as the fire did not spread.
In the meantime, the police and the Guyana Fire Service are continuing their investigations.
The Municipal also in wake of this incident is currently looking at increasing their security measure at the complex.
