Cricket fans were treated to several action packed encounters when the nation’s top teams battled for honours in the Carib Beer National Softball Cricket tournament currently being contested countrywide.In one of those matches in the East Coast Zone, Hitters XI mauled Vipers XI by a decisive 116 runs to advance into the next round of the competition. Ryan Gopaul led the batting averages with a resilient unbeaten century (112) for Hitters after that team won the toss and elected to bat. At the end of their allotted 15 overs, they had amassed 250-4. Gopaul’s knock was decorated with ten sixes and five fours. Vijay Kissoon (3-12 from 3 overs) then unleashed a spell of incisive bowling to restrict Vipers X1 to 134 in 11 overs. Hanzo XI then made light work of Hot Steppers XI by 104 runs after the eventual winners were inserted. Rajpaul Budram (57) led the batting averages to set up a score of 188-9 for his team in 15 overs. In reply Hot Steppers XI were 84-8 in 12.4 overs when the game ended with Kevin Ragbeer (3-30 from 3 overs) taking the bowling honours. He took a hat-trick in his final over. In another exciting match, Trophy Stall defeated Gopaul Mandir XI by 73 runs.
Trophy Stall XI batted first and scored 185 – 9 in 15 overs. In reply, Gopaul Mandir XI could only amass 112 all out in 13.1 overs. Trophy Stall returned later in the day to register a second win, this time against Uprising XI by 86 runs.
The winners scored 219-6 in 15 overs and then returned to restrict Uprising to 133 all out in 14 overs. Hanzo XI, also playing in their second match, defeated Harry XI by 5 wickets: They took first strike and scored 123 all out in 14.2 overs. Hanzo XI then lashed off the required total in 12.4 overs while conceding 5 wickets.
Hot Steppers XI returned for their second match and defeated Sleep In XI by 8 wickets. The winners scored 95 all out in 13.2 overs. In reply, Hot Steppers XI made 96-2 in 11.5 overs. Asif Mohamed (50) was the principal scorer.
Mike Photocopy Centre XI was also in the winner’s row defeating Rockets XI by 9 wickets. The latter team took first strike and scored 103 all out in 15 overs. Ronald Tappin (29) was the top scorer. In reply, Mike Photocopy Centre XI wiped off the deficit (106-1) in 7.1 overs.
Other results are Randy XI defeated Chris Auto Sales and Spares XI by 2 wickets in their first match and returned later to defeat Waterland DX XI by 4 wickets. Helena Mandir also prevailed over Farmers XI in a close 1 run encounter. The winners batted first and rattled up 200 all out in 15 overs after Dalchand Budram (73) lashed an enterprising half century with support from Nandram Bhaniswari (69) and Suraj Ramphal (40). In reply, Farmers XI came tantalizingly close, scoring 199 all out in their 15 overs. Bomb Squad XI then defeated Auto Fashion XI by 69 runs moments before AN & S Auto Spares XI defeated New Generation XI by 18 runs.
In matches played in the Georgetown zone at the Police Ground, Eve Leary Ground, Regal XI defeated Mafia XI by 32 runs. Also at the same venue, Farm Masjid XI defeated Zahir XI by 7 wickets. The winners registered another victory, this time against Renegade XI by 49 runs.
In another match in that zone, Diamond All Stars defeated Speed Boat XI by 52 runs. Diamond All Stars elected to bat and scored 137-6 in 15 overs. In reply, Speed Boat XI was limited to 85 all out in 9.3 overs. At the Uitvlugt Ground, Wolf’s Warriors defeated Surprise Warriors by a massive 146 runs. The winners batted first and scored 174 all out in 15 overs. Mandolall Deonarine (4-9 from 3 overs) and Diaram Persaud (3-8 from 3 overs) then contrived to restrict Surprise Warriors XI to a meager 28 in 7.5 overs, Wolf’s Warriors later played in their second match and made light work of Hyde Park by 69 runs.
The latter team made amends in their second match by defeating Surprise Warriors XI by 6 wickets. In matches in the Berbice zone, Tamarind Root XI prevailed over Seven X1 by 6 wickets. Fyrish Shakers XI then capped off the day’ activities with a 30 runs defeat over Superstar XI. Fyrish Shakers XI batted first and scored 106-3 in 15 overs. In reply, Superstars XI were bundled out for 76 in 10 overs.
