Dear Editor,
International Basketball returned to the Parade Ground, Burnham Court May of 1974, when Guyana hosted Barbados Senior National Team in two friendly Goodwill International matches.
This venue was also used when the “Land of many Waters” hosted Trinidad & Tobago and Martinique in a triangular tournament February of 1970 and lifted the Republic’s trophy playing unbeaten, but this time around the opponents were different.
Barbados arrived with some seasoned veterans in Malcolm Stanton, Harry Garnes, Jeffrey Stoute, but Mike Brusche and his troops had different ideas. In game one 20 year old Aubrey Chalmers led all scorers with 16 points as Guyana took the ascendancy with 60 to 43 points victory; Harold Caesar lent admirable support with 14 points for Barbados, Malcolm Stanton and Harry Garnes scored 8 points each.
In game two Guyana celebrated the series triumph with a hard fought 48 to 43 points victory.
The Guyana squad was:
Mike Brusche – Captain
Winston Joseph
Aubrey Chalmers
Phillip Daniels
Melroy Fitzalbert
Gavin Kendall
Harold Caesar
Keith Hinds
Herman Sullivan
Merton Fitzalbert
Hewley Harry – Debutant
Neville ‘Mice’ Wiltshire
Raymond Goulding – Coach
The series then shifted to Bridgetown November 26 to December 6 when Barbados reciprocated by hosting Guyana.
Mike Brusche then started the Barbados tour with a commanding 79-76 points victory against the Bajan youth team; skipper Brusche led all scorers with 22 points, Merton Fitzalbert 10 points and Aubrey Chalmers 10 points, but had no answers for Barbados seniors in the two match international series.
Guyana lost 84 to 74 for Barbados star player Malcolm Stanton scored 20 points and Jeffrey Stoute had 17 points for Guyana. James ‘Bumpy’ Devonish top scored with 16 points, Mike Brusche 15 points, Compton Hinds 12 points and Aubrey Chalmers 10 points.
In game two Barbados won 63 to 57 points. Malcolm Stanton 15 points, Jeffrey Stoute 10 points while for Guyana Merton Fitzalbert 17 points and his elder brother Melroy 10 points.
