Fraser and Latcha also left out
The Executive Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board is expressing its outrage at the non selection of Delbert Hicks and Homchand Pooran for the 21-man training squad selected by the Senior national cricket selectors for the upcoming Regional First class season.
The Committee at their monthly meeting on Sunday last also expressed surprise at the omission of pacer Keyron Fraser and off spinner Stephen Latcha who both performed well during the recent Inter-County 4-day tournament.
In voicing their displeasure, the Executive notes that Hicks was recently the selectors’ choice for the national one-day team and they are now left baffled that he {Hicks} would now be left high and dry after just one first class match and be replaced by the person he was selected in front of in the first place.
The Committee is questioning if Hicks’ wicket-keeping has dropped to such an alarming level since his last selection or if his batting has fallen away drastically.
Hicks in two matches scored two half centuries while Pooran scored three half centuries in five innings including two against the Demerara team. Pooran’s non inclusion is another in a series of glaring omissions committed against a dedicated player who over the years has performed outstandingly well at the Inter County level.
The BCB said it is of the view that if performances at the Inter County level are not the main criteria for selection, that what is it?
“We are aware that Pooran’s age has been an issue in the past but at 29 he is still young enough to play at the regional level. People seem to have forgotten that the West Indies, only two months ago had a captain who was 37, Travis Dowlin made his Test debut at 32, Brendon Nash also made his debut in his thirties while Reon King played for Guyana well beyond his thirties at the expense of younger fast bowlers.”
Promising fast bowler Keyron Fraser bowled well for the Rest Team and had a 5-wicket haul against Essequibo while Latcha bowled well in his two matches taking 11-wickets but for reasons best known to the selectors both have been left out. Another fast bowler who barely took a wicket was selected instead.
The BCB also noted that none of its players has a discipline problem but pointed out that a player walked off a cricket ground because of his displeasure with the end he was bowling from and has been included.
The BCB said it is urging the Guyana Cricket Board to make sure that performances of all players are recognized and that the national selectors work in the national interest of selecting the best possible team based on merit.
