As Christmas nears, the Guyana Police Force is reiterating that all categories of road users should remember to exercise ‘Care, Courtesy, Caution, Common-Sense and Consideration’ as 110 persons have died on the roadways thus far for 2009 – with 18 of the victims being children.
This is in comparison to 104 deaths for the same period last year, with four children among those who lost their lives.
In a statement, the force noted that its Traffic Department is continuing efforts to make the roads safer through rigid enforcement of the traffic laws and education, with meaningful support from the Ministries of Home Affairs and Public Works and Communication, as well as the National Road Safety Council, the Traffic Advisory Committee and other stakeholders.
According to the currently available statistics, 110 persons died following 91 accidents as compared to 104 deaths in 92 accidents last year.
Pedestrians topped the ten categories of deaths as a result of accidents with 32 while car occupants and pedal cyclists are recorded at 16 each.
Of the 90 fatal accidents this year, speeding peaked the cause scale at 53 while contrary to popular belief that minibuses are the major causes of death on the roadways, private cars topped with 37 as compared to 20 motor lorries and 19 motorcycles. Minibuses and bicycles were responsible for 17 deaths each.
Even as the zero tolerance campaign “Operation Safeway’ continues, a total of 60,079 cases have been brought against motorists who breached the laws during this year. The most prevalent offence was speeding which accounted for 17,411 cases facing the courts. There were 5,333 overloaded minibuses and 113 cases of persons who failed to adhere to sirens.
The most deaths as a result of accidents occurred in the month of May numbering 17 as compared to last month which recorded 14. Thus far, three persons have died for this month.
The most deaths as a result of road accidents occurred in ‘C’ division (25) as opposed to 7 in ‘G’ division. A, B, E & F divisions recorded 23, 22 and 19 respectively.
