Several students of an East Bank Demerara primary school were robbed Tuesday by a bandit posing as a teacher.

Kaieteur News has learnt that shortly after 08:00 hrs, a lone man waited until the security guard of Grove Primary School had gone to the back of the compound to lock the gates there, then used the opportunity to slip through the front entrance.

According to a teacher, who asked not to be named, the school had not closed its gates as yet when the robbery took place. The robber reportedly walked into a classroom, borrowed a stick of chalk from a teacher and went into another where the few students that were gathered there thought it was a new teacher or parent.

The man drew a figure on the board and then went over to a few female students and started removing their stud earrings.

According to the teacher, another staffer who had seen the robber while passing had assumed it was a parent.

It was only after the students raised an alarm that it was realized that the man was no teacher or parent.

The school, which has one security guard in the day, is now reviewing its procedures and will be tightening up on same, the teacher said.
