The Central Islamic Organization of Guyana yesterday reported that the month of Zul Hijjah 1430 AH commenced on Wednesday. As a result the festival of Eid ul Adha will be commemorated on Friday November 27, 2009.
For Eid ul Adha, an animal is sacrificed in commemoration of Abraham’s sacrifice of his son. This festival is incorporated in the great pilgrimage to Mecca which should properly be made during this month but it is also observed all over the Muslim world at the same time.
According to the CIOG, some 40 Guyanese departed for Mecca this year under the leadership of Sheik. Moen ul Hack. The CIOG wished them a peaceful journey to complete the necessary rituals to finalize the Hajj.
The underlying importance of the festival of Eid ul Adha is the spirit of sacrifice (Qurbani) in memory of Abraham’s great act of faith many centuries ago.
