Berbice take 1st innings points against E’bo
By Sean Devers
Both Demerara and the Rest team packed their sides with batting and rejected Guyana Wicketkeeper Derwin Christian stroked a top class 130 to spur the Rest team to 364-5 from just 76 overs on the opening day of their Guyana Cricket Board 4-day match at the Police ground in the city yesterday.
Christian, who lost his place to Delbert Hicks in the Guyana First Class and One-Day teams this year after his maiden First-class century was followed by a string of low scores, batted with confidence and flair as he matched his natural talent with intelligent shot selection after the Rest team elected to bat first on a batting paradise of a pitch and a fast outfield.
In sultry conditions, Christian smashed 14 fours and 4 sixes from 112 balls before he seemed unlucky to be given leg before to Skipper Zaheer Mohamed just before the close as the Rest Team dominated the first day action which began 39 minutes late because the wickets were not properly pitched (opposing stumps not being in line with each other).
National player Deon Ferrier, who like Christian was not selected for Demerara, is also staking a claim for National re-selection for next year’s Regional First Class season with a disciplined unbeaten 53 with 6 fours from 101 balls. Ferrier and Christian added 147 runs for the 5th wicket after Waslim Haslim, who made 50 from 55 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes, drove pacer Leon Scott to extra cover at 203-4.
Earlier, West Indies under-19 opener Trevon Griffith hit 4 fours in 25 before he flicked Scott to square-leg at 48-1 while former Test opener Ryan Ramdass was removed by off-spinner Steven Jacobs for 46 from 78 balls with 7 fours at 110-2.
National left-hander Vishal Singh, like the rest of the Rest Team’s top order failed to capitalise on good starts and was run out for 40 from 66 balls with 4 fours and a six at 153-3 before Haslim’s demise made way for the entertaining 5th wickets partnership as a bowling attack badly lacking firepower, struggled all day.
Christian who pulled leg-spinner Troy Gonsalves for 6 to post the 300, clobbered Jacobs for a straight six to reach his first ton at this level and his level-headed batting comes at an opportune time as the Guyana selectors desperately search for a competent Keeper.
Scott had 2-50 from 10 overs while Mohamed who bowled too short and wide on the flat track, took 1-88 from 16 overs and Jacobs 1-95 from 17.
And minnows Essequibo continued their consistent poor showing at this level by being bowled out for 105 at Anna Regina by Berbice, who reached 128-1 by the close of the first day’s play in the other match which began yesterday.
Navin Bahudur top scored with 29 as national left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul took five wickets and West Indies under-19 pacer Keon Joseph supported with 2 wickets.
Skipper and first-class player Assad Fudadin (48*) and debutant opener Artley Bailey (43*) have featured in an unfinished century 2nd wicket stand after Devon Clements fell for 9.
Even without their top players, Narsingh Deonarine (unavailable due to West Indies duties) and Sewnarine Chattergoon, Hicks and Royston and Esaun Crandon
(injured) Berbice are highly favoured to beat the home side who have been readmitted to this level after a one-year absence although nothing significant was done for the development of 2-innings cricket in Guyana’s largest county.
Both matches were marred by the unavailability of scores books resulting in just one book being used at both venues. Both Essequibo and Demerara could not produce score books yesterday as the general standard of this level of cricket continues to dip at an alarmingly rate.
