The fire gutted a Lot 101 Hunter Street Albouystown property on October 31, while was next door to the house in which Hermina Khan and her four children live.

The water the firemen used was filled with silt, and in trying to contain the blaze, soaked the mattresses, clothing and other valuables in the house that Khan was renting from a sister.

Even her children’s schoolbooks were destroyed.

The woman explained that she is a single parent who provides for her family by selling flowers, nail polish and home-made beverages.

Three of her children attend school. The eldest is 12. The mother further said her youngest daughter, two-year-old Maria Ramroop, has an eye ailment, which she sustained after falling from her bed.

She is still receiving treatment at the GPHC.

“I am glad to get a piece of land to build something so me and my children can live.

“It is very hard on me because I try my best to save money. If anyone is willing to assist me in any way I would be thankful.”
