As private individuals seek to take comedy in Guyana to the next level, the first season of Mori J’von Comedy Jam is set for launch today at the National Cultural Centre from 20:00hrs.
The gala evening will be used to honor veteran, Habeeb Khan, by bestowing him with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to comedy and other forms of entertainment in Guyana and the Caribbean.
It will also see the establishment of a fund for his continued financial support. He is currently suffering from bronchitis but is playing a major role in the rebirth of comedy on the local shores.
With direction from Russell Lancaster it is the brainchild of Ron Morrison and his wife Olive Gopaul-Morrison.
The event brings together leading professional comedians. That list includes Habeeb Khan, Henry Rodney, Howard Lorrimer, Godfrey Naughton, Linden “Jumbie” Jones, Miranda Austin, Rajian Tiwari, Sherri Ann Dyal, Basil Bradshaw and Michael Ignatius. It features a combination of stage and TV shows and is slated to take Guyana’s comedy to the next level.
This is the first time that all these talents have come together and the first time that a team will actively be involved in writing to produce an entire season of programmes for local and regional audiences.
