The three army ranks who were detained on Sunday last by police have been handed over to their colleagues in the GDF. Reports are that the men were released into the custody of the army sometime on Wednesday.
In the meantime, this newspaper has been informed that the related file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice on charges since the fuel which the trio had in their possession is illegal.
Also, as police continue their investigations, they are still to locate a person from Morawhanna, whom it is believed is linked to the smuggled fuel.
Up to press time yesterday the police had not yet made contact with the individual.
On Sunday last, the ranks — a Captain, a Lance Corporal and a Private— were arrested at Parika after they were seen in Leguan asking for directions.
Persons associated with the ranks said they had left their Morawhanna location to conduct business at Parika, and had indicated that the business had to do with the sale of chicken in the Northwest District.
The three Coast Guard ranks had made an unauthorised trip from the GDF Coast Guard Base at Morawahanna in Region One, and were in possession of three and one-half drums of fuel, four cellular phones, one GPS device, and $116,000. The officer was in possession of his service pistol and five rounds of matching ammunition. Tests on the fuel later showed that it was illegal.
Investigations are continuing.
