A fine half century by Essequibo wicketkeeper batsman Gewan Singh guided Golden Fleece SC to an 8 wicket victory over El Dorado SC in the final of the Maurice Brandon Memorial 50 overs Cricket Competition on Sunday at Johanna Cecelia Ground in South Essequibo.
El Dorado SC batted first and were bowled out for 106 in 22.2 overs. Tomeshwar Deonarine made 29 and Robin Persaud 16. Thomas Chand bagged 4-15 off 7 overs and former National U-19 left arm spinner Beesham Seepersaud took 2-8 from 2.2 overs.
Golden Fleece responded with 108-2 in 24.2 overs. Gewan Singh top scored with 65 not out while national U-15 player Vijay Surujpaul contributed 16.
Singh took the man-of-the-match and the best batsman awards while Thomas Chand received the prize for the best bowler in the final.
Speaking at the simple ceremony after the game, President of the South Essequibo Cricket Committee Cyril Drepaul congratulated the winning team and called on the business community to support the game in South Essequibo.
Meanwhile, Coach Forbes Daniels told Kaieteur sport that a presentation match will be played between Golden Fleece and a rest team on Sunday at the same venue and that Golden Fleece SC and El Dorado SC will be presented with their respective trophies after the game.
The competition was played in memory of the late Maurice Brandon who was a former Secretary of the Essequibo Cricket Board. (Zaheer Mohamed)
