Star Party Rentals provides lights to ensure night Final
By Sean Devers
Banks DIH has pledged $1 million while Star Party Rentals has provided the lights for Sunday’s 4-team Banks Beer Port Mourant 20/20 fundraising cricket competition at the Albion ground in Corentyne.
Stanford Super Star, Lennox Cush and national players Deon Ferrier and Chris Barnwell will play as Guest players for Corentyne Titans while former Test leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo and former West Indies under-19 left-hander Gajanand Singh will turn out for New Line Cavaliers. The local stars will hope to shine under lights in the final at a venue which hosted the first ever ODI in the West Indies and which will host the Barbados/Guyana Regional 50-over contest later this month.
At the launching of the fundraiser at Thirst Park yesterday, Port Mourant Cricket Club Treasurer Gomattie Dubaria thanked Banks DIH for sponsoring the prize money ($500,000 for winner, $300,000 for runner-up and $100,000 each for the other 2 teams) and explained that the funds raised will be used to replace the dilapidated pavilion at the Port Mourant ground.
West Berbice Super Kings and the New Amsterdam Canje Tigers are the other teams vying for the cash prizes and trophies and a 10/10 exhibition match between a Port Mourant under-17 side and Number 70 Young Stars under-17s will start the day’s proceedings at 10:00hrs.
The Exhibition match has been sponsored by Demerara Bank while A. Ali has pledged $60,000 for the Man-of-the-Match in the Final and Dubaria informed that the draw will be done today at the Little Rock TV Station in Berbice.
Port Mourant once ruled the roost in Berbice cricket and produced the county’s 1st Test player in pacer John Trim in addition to several of the best batsmen to represent the West Indies in the 1960s and 70s.
Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Alvin Kallicharran and Joe Solomon all played for Port Mourant who was also represented by Barbadian Sir Clyde Walcott when he worked in Guyana with the Bookers Sugar Industry (now GUYSUCO) and played for this county in Regional cricket.
Nagamootoo is the last player from Port Mourant to play Test cricket and the club informed that they are not fielding a team in the competition since, in the absence of the Rose Hall Town and Albion players, they have combined with Upper Corentyne and Skeldon to form the Corentyne Titans which start the competition as the pre-tournament favorites.
Banks DIH Sales Consultant for Premium Beer and Power Stout, Mike Fung said the Beverage company was pleased to support the fundraising drive of a club which has produced so many great players who have brought joy to Guyanese cricket fans over the years.
Fung disclosed that to add to what should be a day of pulsating cricket, a Merry-go-Round, food and games plus music from the Rhythm Stars sound system will provide plenty of entertainment for the entire family beyond the boundary.
Admission is $1,000 for pre-sold tickets and $1,200 at the gate. Children under 12 will enter the ground free of charge.
