CARICOM is lobbying heavily for debt write-offs for Guyana and several small islands and countries in light of the financial downturn.
Meetings were held recently with top officials of the World Bank and according to President Bharrat Jagdeo, there are commitments from lending institutions to ease the pressure.
Jagdeo, who is also the Chairman of CARICOM, met with the head of the World Bank during a recent meeting in Turkey.
Speaking to reporters at the International Convention Cente, Liliendaal, the President said that while Guyana was fortunate to not take a direct hit from the world recession, loss of revenues and the ensuing unemployment from the recession demanded some form of multilateral debt relief for countries hard hit from the drop in
“It is a message I have consistently taken to many others I have spoken to…”
Among those spoken to recently were US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, and the Secretary General of United Nations.
According to Jagdeo, one of the more important issues raised was the G20 classifications which rates countries based on banking regulations, among other factors. Several Caribbean countries have fallen on the radar as having shady tax havens in the offshore banking system and have been classified as questionable.
According to Jagdeo, under the G20 classifications, many of the countries have been blacklisted and unless the issue is addressed, the Caribbean region will be suffering even greater consequences since there will be a greater diversion of financial flow from this region to other regions of the world.
