Gafoor, McDonald, Collins face off in highly anticipated scrabble tourney
The nation’s top scrabble players will be engaged in a battle of wits and words in an effort to ascertain the configuration of the best ten local players. This showdown will occur tomorrow morning in the pavilion of the Georgetown Cricket Club, Bourda and pits the skill of players such as Moen Gafoor, Abigail McDonald and Fred Collins, all anxious to make strong statements.
The tournament takes a two-tier format where those players ranked below the top ten would battle against each other in an attempt to stake a claim for inclusion among the games elite players. The championship is one of the most anticipated events on the scrabble calendar and allows the top 10 rated players to assess their ability as they test their skills against each other.
The fierce rivalry witnessed in the past between former national champion, Fred Collins and current national champ, Abigail McDonald will continue and obviously add some intrigue to the proceedings while Moen Gafoor, who has shown tremendous improvement over the past months would also want to claim the coveted number one spot. Add James Krakowsky, who has shown marked improvement of
recent, Floyd Carmichael, a dark horse that can upset the best player on his day and the persistent Lindener, Grace Hercules, and the situation becomes even more dicey. A point of note also, is that Krakowsky is the most improved player of late, after making a huge leap to a mere 15 points away from breaking the 1800 barrier.
The rating system used by GASP is the ARPAD ELO and is the same used in chess. The format is guided by a statistical principal of expectations where players are rated based on the number of games won in comparison to those played.
There other segment of the competition involves players falling outside of the top ten bracket and gives those players a realistic chance of breaking into the top ten. A competitive battle is envisaged with the likes of Maurice Munroe, Grace Hercules, Michel Benjamin and Ruby Collins among others, all nurturing ambitions of prevailing. Players are reminded that the tournament starts at 10:00hrs but they are required to be at the venue at least by 9:45hrs to facilitate the registration process.
