Dear Editor,
I read the reports on the PNCR elections by the Returning Officer, Mr. Joe Harmon, and the Van West Charles faction.
The Van West Charles is an effective effort of detailing a long list of irregularities that permeated the PNCR electoral process. The PNCR might dispute the extent to which these irregularities impacted on the elections, but I am sure they will be hard pressed to deny the irregularities occurred. Nevertheless, I anticipate denials and counter charges to ensue between the PNCR and the Van West Charles Faction. The Joseph Harmon report is of a different colour. This report was prepared by the appointed Returning Officer and was made public by the PNCR. I was therefore surprised to find within it potent evidence that the PNCR elections was not representative of the will of the party’s membership.
Mr. Harmon reports that out of the 1,130 accredited delegates only 841 were present to vote for the position of leader at the start of the election and by the time of voting for the last position approximately 65% had left. He reported that the Party Treasurer received the support of 15 % of the electorate, the vice chairmen 35% and 29%. Certainly these officers cannot claim they enjoy the confidence of the PNCR membership.
The coup-de-grace is the election for the 15 members of the PNCR election. All of the 15 received the support of less than 25% of the electorate. Ten of the 15 received less than 20% support and two members received just 10% support. Mr. Hamilton Green and Dr. Faith Hardin returned to the PNCR executive with a whopping 17% each.
I am surprised that these persons can seriously claim to have received a mandate from the PNCR membership to manage the affairs of the party.
I hope that individually and collectively they will do the right thing and take the necessary steps to ensure that the PNCR membership can really have a say in who manages the Party.
