A brawl between two drug addicts over ‘begging rights’ ended with one of them dropping dead at the Georgetown Hospital yesterday after being clubbed in the head.
The victim, identified as Pyieandy, of Hill Street Albouystown, succumbed at around 14:55 hrs before he could receive medical treatment.
Police said that another drug addict, who is in custody at the Alberttown Police Station, has been detained. A source said that he is a former boxer who is in his forties and in poor health.
Kaieteur News understands that the two ‘junkies’ came to blows when Pyieandy went to a Bourda market stallholder and asked for ten dollars.
The other junkie took objection to this, since he was in the habit of soliciting money from the same shopkeeper.
An argument then ensued, during which Pyieandy allegedly struck the suspect twice with an iron pipe.
The suspect alleged that he retaliated by striking Pyieandy in the head with a piece of wood.
The victim collapsed and was taken to the GPHC by ambulance at around 14:55 hrs.
A source said that hospital attendants were taking the semi-conscious man to have an x-ray done when he succumbed.
