Fourteen years old Devina Ramnarine of Port Mourant Secondary School on Tuesday 22nd September was named winner of the Berbice Cricket Board 70th Anniversary Essay Competition for school children in the ancient county.
The Competition which was co-sponsored by the National Communication Network Channel 15 was opened to youths between the ages of 11 to 16 years and they had to write a 300 – 400 words essay on the topic “My Favourite Berbice Cricketer and Role Model”.
Devina Ramnarine’s winning essay stated that her favourite Berbice Cricketer and Role Model was West Indies opening batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon whom she described as her Hero. The essay stated that Chattergoon was disciplined, hardworking, committed and was a perfect example of how one’s dream can be achieved once you are prepared to go the extra mile.
The first runner up essay was written by Neola Hutson of Lower Corentyne Secondary School, while Royland Green of Port Mourant Secondary School copped the 2nd runner up prize. Hutson selected Esaun Crandon as her favourite cricketer while Green chose Royston Crandon as hers. Dozens of youths wrote essays on the topic with most of them selecting Chattergoon, the Crandon brothers, Narsingh Deonarine, Assad Fudadin and Devendra Bishu as their favourite cricketer and positive role model.
Ms Ramnarine received a trophy and $15,000 in educational materials, Hutson carried home the runner up trophy and $10,000 in education materials while Green received $5,000 in educational materials.
Treasurer of the Berbice Cricket Board, Anil Beharry congratulated the winners on their achievements while expressing gratitude to all those who wrote the essays.
The Treasurer stated that the Berbice Cricket Board wants to get all youths in Berbice educated on the game and its players and the essay competition was one such medium.
The Board also needs to know which of its players were viewed as positive role models to their peers in the county.
The Berbice Cricket Board would like to express thanks NCN Channel 15, Anand Sanasie, and the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club for their sponsorship of the essay competition.
